On 16th November at the Wokingham Borough Council meeting, George Evans asked: “In previous years Wokingham Borough Council, under Conservative administration, has incentivised shopping in Wokingham and Woodley towns in the weeks running up to Christmas by making car parking on Saturdays free - it has recently been announced this will not be happening this year. Now that car parking charges have doubled and chargeable periods expanded to include evenings and Sundays, what steps is the Council taking to mitigate impacts on businesses and incentivise visiting our towns?”
See the video from the meeting for his supplementary question and the answer.
We were astounded by the lead member for Highways' response that there has been no negative impact, and footfall has not fallen since the parking charges were doubled and imposed on Sundays and evenings.
We will continue to press for change and for the Lib Dems to see sense, at the same time we are putting together our plans to improve the town centre which we will implement in May should Conservatives be successful in regaining control of Wokingham Borough Council.
